A Brilliant Answer by a Student- Kavya Rawat

I am very proud as a teacher to share this answer written by my student, Kavya Rawat of Class XII at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kathmandu in one of the Pre-Board exam answer papers of English in the year 2011.. Kavya is a very creative girl and an avid reader. In my career of a decade as a teacher of English I have come across many students who inspired me by their intelligence, goodness and by many other special traits, academic or non-academic.
This answer is written to a question (write an article) on Social Networking Websites in the B-Section (Advanced Writing Skills) of the English question paper.

Here is her answer written in five to 8 minutes in the exam!!!

ENOUGH FACEBOOKING, FACE PEOPLE NOW
I know most of you will begin this article with a yawn; the number of anti-facebook, myspace, twitter articles are enough to start competing against the Indian population magnitude. But the creeping of abbreviations like "lol", "omg!!", "brb" in what used to be 'normal' face-to-face interactions is beginning to pose as an enormous irritant. Rather than just walk down four steps, an IM is more convenient nowadays; and why not, since most of the heads are anyways engrossed in friend-making, sanity-taking websites? Whatever happened to hand-delivered invites, announcements and birthday cards--nowadays, a tweet is enough when you've borne a child, gotten engaged or lost a parent!! May be we can be hopeful and witness world war-III being fought over wall posts with visions, deadly commenting from both sides!! People find 'love' online and are happy with just that. Phonebills if at all, only consist of net charges--no one makes a call or texts a message it seems. And people are happy--no, really--with this evolution.Somewhere along the (on-)line, the world transformed from a vibrant swirl of emotions to a digital mechanism of emotions. I agree with Charley's psychiatrist in the story THE THIRD LEVEL; this world is filled with insecurities and somehow, facebook became the means of escape. Hiding under a facade of 'coolness' our generation has indeed become 'cold'. Wake up!! There exists a world beyond social networks--an actual society, actual friends, actual people with actual problems and lives. There is poverty, burdens beauty and people with half-burnt faces to look at; do not take the bait and fall into this trap. Imagination is the only thing your computer lacks--don't let it take that away from you too.

PARAYOO NIN GAANATHIL AARUM KOTHIKKUMEE
MADHURIMA ENGINE VANNOO?

(This is one of my favourite Malayalam songs. Hats off to the writer, musician and the singer. I have made a humble attempt to translate the song here into English. If my translation fails to capture the beauty of the lyrics, kindly excuse me or correct me.)

How could you bring the sweetness of unsavoured honey to your song?

Is it because of the grace of that incredible moment you were born on the lap of the night?

Is it because someone dropped a bit of cosmic light on your forehead?

Is it because the heart's pains turned into pieces of diamond and pierced the dark?

How could you bring this hitherto unheard sweetness to your song?
Is it because of your harmony with the chariot sound of the imminent dawn
coming with a flap of its tender wings trembling the tent of darkness?

Is it because your gracious voice wipe the tear-streaked cheeks?

Tell me, How could you bring this envious sweetness to your song?

(Thanks to Sri. K.Satchidanandan for suggesting some corrections)

A WOMAN, A WEATHER

She sprouted the dormant seeds in me
I bloomed like jacaranda
My champak fragrance of yesteryears filled the air
And the milky sap dropped in fulfilment
Your windy evenings shook my branches
And I dropped the fruits hidden among my leaves and tender flowers
You shook my roots and we became one in my bark and branches
You were the wind in me
We were entwined, your wind and my branches, like smoke through hair
I fell on you in orgasmic submission like a tree felled.

She was affectionate downpour
She sprouted all that was dormant in me
Washed my dirty lanes afresh
She was the infinite sky
She was furious monsoon
She burnt me completely
Left me ashes
She thundered in my ears and echoed in my inner ears
She drowned my dreams and snatched my banks
She ripped apart my roof and tore apart my fluttering colourful flags
She denuded me, made my branches bare and the wind blew through me
like snake on me

She stifled me in her chill
Blurred my vision and choked my throat
She stole my sunshine and made me dull.

I became an ugly mess in your monsoonic downpours
I lost the initial fragrance kindled by you
I spread the stink of my undissolved residues
Many a feet splashed and rippled my calm
You washed me afresh
You burnt my tall tops in your thunderous spanks
You pelted me with your words and melted my hollow heaps
You fertiled my lap

Your summers scorched my bare body
You seeped through the pores of my hair
You threw mirage of myriad dreams
And parched my throat

The chill of your spurns numbed me
And I groped for warmth with stretched palms
Everything stood still brooding
I was the sun lost in the dense fog of your being

You all did something or the other to me
I wish I could capture in words my unseen bruises and unsung blooms.

A FACEBOOK FRIEND

Facebook takes almost all my evenings. Somehow I can’t get over this addiction. I believe facebook boosts our morale and self esteem and quenches our Narcissistic thirst. Don’t you feel really important and happy to see the trident of red lights showing friend requests, messages and notifications? How much do we wish to see the LIKEs on our fotos and posts! A friend request from a long lost school mate!! I am pampered by facebook. Every time I am online, I feel I am surrounded by a cheering crowd.

It was for my winter vacation I reached Bangalore. Lots of plans charted out. Hardly had I met the first few priorities for the vacation, I got a call from my father that my nephew is not well and is hospitalized at Kochi. As I was sensing a chill pass through my bones, my father increased the gravity of the news. It seems he had met with an accident and is in critical condition. A few minutes later came a call from my uncle that my nephew is no more!! He burst into a wail.

My nephew was just 29 years old!! I felt giddy!! That reticent boy with his inhibited smile! Though he has grown thin last time I saw him a year ago, I can’t erase the chubby child he was when he used to be our angelic doll to play with. My nieces and brothers used to find him cute and charming. Over the years he had become more withdrawn and his mysterious taciturnity would inflate at many a family gatherings. I used to wonder what made that bubbly child so quiet though he enjoyed the jokes we cracked.

“Last  evening we spoke and he said he would be home next week and then we can decide upon the girl he saw last”, his father recollected as he sat pale in front of me.

Except for a few blood stains left by the postmortem, his face was calm. The journey from the front yard to the cremation ground seemed like eternity. When the moonlight shone on the river, we were waiting for him to turn into ash. With the towels on our shoulders, we sat scattered wondering at this incredibility. As I sat brooding, I was hit by incessant questions. This is the place where we had cremated our maternal grandma, an abiding presence in my life. She is my childhood, her voice chanting the evening prayers and her patting me for my devotion. We came home after leaving him on the river bank. Where else can we go? We can’t follow him. Even if we could, where would we go? Who bids farewell to whom? The dead to the living or the living to the dead?

Days after his mother’s face became blank and his father moved about in atheistic indignation, I returned to Bangalore. His post mortem report said it was a cardiac arrest in sleep!!! In the morning his roommates found their usually punctual friend still in bed. The postmortem revealed that his beats stopped within a couple of hours after he went to bed. It was true but it sounded like a cruel medical joke!

He became a sigh in our conversations and I was drawn to chores in Bangalore. I had to return to Kathmandu within a couple of weeks.

One evening, after having read all the notifications and messages on my facebook page, I was greedy for more. Among the many “to be confirmed” friend requests, I found an old request from one Mr. Rohit. I sat paralysed as I was looking at the familiar face of my nephew we/who bade farewell on the river bank!!!

DINNER TABLE

I hate dinner tables with platters spread out
People with loud mouth
That’s where they dissect me
Pierce me with the forks and chew me but don’t digest me
They try hard over the dinner table
It’s for the mouthful they meet at the table
Though they catch big fish there I don’t bite the bait
I am served to all, spiced and chopped and sliced.
I am present by my absence….so they…. .
